Blacks Are Targeted!!!

A new report by Human Rights Watch, Targeting Blacks: Drug Law Enforcement and Race in the United States, found that blacks are arrested and imprisoned for drug-related crimes at a much higher rate than whites, although whites commit more drug offenses.

According to the report, a black man is 12 times more likely to be sent to prison for a drug offense than a white man and a black woman, five times more likely than a white woman. A recent report by the Pew Charitable Trusts also found that one in 15 black men are locked up in the U.S. compared to one in 106 white men.

Competition for local elementary school aged kids at Brooklyn's The Park Avenue Bank on Avenue J. It was so much fun being one of the panelist for the Art Show. It was very inspiring to see the creative work of 1st, 5th and 8th graders. 1st place winner Rina Gershman was presented with a check from The Park Avenue Banks Assistant Vice President Ramon Navarro.

The New York City Department of Transportation (DOT), in partnership with the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum and the support of Google Inc. and Transportation Alternatives, is pleased to announce an international design competition for new bicycle parking for the City of New York. As part of our effort to promote cycling as a sustainable, mainstream transportation option and in keeping with the environmental goals of PlaNYC 2030, DOT is seeking to tap the creative energy of the world design and art communities for this important element of street furniture.

The purpose of the competition is to develop functional, well-designed sidewalk racks and to generate new concepts for bicycle parking inside commercial and residential buildings. These two initiatives, in addition to NYCDOT’s commitment to increasing the number of miles of bicycle facilities, providing the City’s first sheltered bike parking stations and creating more bicycle parking at transit stations, will raise the profile of bicycling as a convenient mode of transportation in New York.

Although bicycle lanes are the most noticeable element of the City’s cycling infrastructure, access to parking is also essential. Indeed, a study conducted by the Department of City Planning found that lack of access to secure bike parking was the primary reason cyclists did not ride to work. The current standard fixture for bicycle parking consists of variations of a fabricated square steel tube called the “CityRack” that is mounted on sidewalks. These fixtures occupy little space on the sidewalk and do not obstruct the flow of people or goods. New York City currently has thousands of CityRacks within its five boroughs and plans to add thousands more in the foreseeable future. The CityRack design, however, has been in use for over ten years and does not fulfill the potential to be an icon for New York City cycling.

The City intends to use the winning sidewalk rack as its new standard for bicycle parking. The design for the in-building rack will first be installed by Google in its New York City headquarters. It may also be used by City-owned buildings in the future, when possible.

In his first term,Clinton's policies followed a distinct slant toward a more conservative and Republican course on social issues.He sponsored the most punitive crime bill in history,which passed in 1993: after suffering the defeat of his "economic stimulus package," which contained funds for urban development.He signed the most punitive welfare reform bill in history,effecting a revolution in New Deal policy toward government support for the poor;and thousands of people silently have been sifted out of federal government employment trhough the "reinventing government program."

Clinton,however,has maintained his his grip on black voters by praying with them in black churches,touting a "mend it,dontend it"affirmative action plan,appointing the largest number of blacks to government positions,and paying more attention to Africa than any previous president.Yet, when one examines the impact of the crime bill on the sharply increased criminalization of black youth in particular,the exposure of the poorest blacks to the labor market without sufficient training or family support,and the lack of investment in urban schools or communities,Clinton's positive initiatives may be viewed as largely symbolic.

I read this cool little 'how to kind of post' on the D.I.Y. website, thought I share it.

Inspired by street art such as graffiti and posters, stickers have become a fast-moving artistic medium. Free downloadable files are posted on the Internet and are available to print and stick anywhere, anytime. A sticker designed in Baltimore today could end up on a road sign in Tokyo tomorrow. Along the way, the interpretation of a sticker shifts as it moves through different cultures. Use this global urban phenomenon to push a cause, promote an event, or simply share your art. Stickers also make great give-aways, party favors, invitations, and more.

Print and Stick The easiest way to make a sticker is with a desktop printer and an 8.5 x 11 sheet of blank sticker paper (label stock), which can be purchased at an office supply store. Print your graphic, cut around the edge, peel off the backing, and then place your sticker wherever you want it to be seen!

Sticker-making kits use pressure to apply a laminate and an adhesive backing to any flat, flexible surface. This option allows you to print your sticker on any paper you want. Sticker makers (such as Xryon) are available online and at craft stores. If you need a large volume of stickers, have them printed and cut commercially.

Waterproofing Stickers printed via ink jet will bleed if left unprotected in the rain and snow. However, printing on glossy paper will make the stickers last longer. Choose outdoor placement carefully, such as under an awning or on the inside window of a newspaper box. Commercially printed stickers use waterproof inks. The ultimate protection for stickers is lamination, which will also make your stickers more expensive.

Post & Download Make your stickers available to the masses. Save or scan your artwork as a PDF file and post on a Web site. Anyone can download and print your art. Include crop marks for square-shaped stickers to make cutting easier. If your stickers have an organic shape, use a thick, black border to make trimming easier. The border will also help your sticker stand out.
